My Hair Diary | My Top 5 Natural Hair Mistakes In 2015

Confessing My Own Thoughts | The No-Heat Challenge

I definitely had lots of mistakes in 2014...but, 2015 has surely been a great year for me from learning how to be the best mother to my one year old son (there is no manual for parenting!), learning more of my husband's swag, and just coming into my own as a dancer (more info coming soon). But I will say I have really accomplished with learning and appreciating my natural hair even more in 2015 than the years before.

I have learned about my hair fully, done numerous natural and extension styles, stayed with my hair care regimen, and even did Big Chop Number #2!

However, with accomplishments there are also mistakes and failures. That is what a healthy hair journey is about! If you do not make the mistakes or going through the failures, there would be no way to make yourself better at caring for your own hair. Well, here are my 5 top natural hair mistakes of 2015:

Product Review: ALAFFIA Authentic African Black Soap-Lavender Ylang Ylang

I've been trying out different kinds of shampoos to fit my own hair care needs. I do like sulfate-free shampoos (no suds nor lather) like the CURLS Creamy Curl Cleanser Sulfate-Free Shampoo. So I thought I try Black Soap for a change, just to see how my hair likes it.

Quarterly Natural Hair Advancement | September And December 2015

I couldn't take the heat damage anymore...so I chopped my almost BSL to neck length. I'm loving my hair more and more each day now!!! Onward to my healthy hair journey!

Although I record my triumphs, failures, double failures, and awesome product reviews in my Hair Diary, I also do something called the "Quarterly Natural Hair Advancement (QNHA)." This entry reflects on the last 3 months comparing with the previous QNHA while giving a summary in one whole journal entry. There are a lot of comparisons with lengths, regimens, goals, habits, and hair styles. I do the QNHA at the end of the months: March, June, September, and December. Yes, I am very intricate with my Hair Diary...but this helps me perfect my current regimen, helps me with future styling options, reminds me of my hair goals, and just fun to do!!

My Hair Diary | Looking Back On My Hair Journey From 2012 - 2015

My Hair Diary | Looking Back On My Hair Journey From 2012 - 2015

The quote above can describe anything from motherhood to growing spiritually and just about anything in life. Sometimes we forget on far we have come, even if it's just an inch - that's still moving forward.

During the end of the year, I usually read over the yearly Hair Diary to see what the year was like for my hair. I note the best and worst styles, products to keep and lose, my emotions and feelings, and create the next year's goals based on my mistakes and errors. This year I decided to do something different.

I decided to read my Hair Diary from beginning in 2012 all the way to the end.

I wanted to see how far I have come in my hair journey and what I needed to work on for the upcoming year. What I read was so enlightening:

Protective Style Series Vol 8.2 | How To Wash Crochet Braids

How To Wash Crochet Braids

I have never been one to wash my hair during a crochet braids style.  I would only do a 'quick wipe down weekly,' but that's about it. However, I thought this was not a healthy practice to continue, especially since I typically wash my hair weekly.

These styles can last for a few weeks, but you can stretch how long you will wear the style if you care for your hair underneath as well as the crochet braids. If you moisturize and seal your hair, you will be able to maximize the entire wear of your crochet braids.

So why not wash and condition your own hair while wearing crochet braids?

Well, let's try it out!

6 Ways To Use Oil In Your Hair Regimen

Castor Oil For Growth And Thickness

“What’s so great about using JBCO?” Well, don’t you know you can use castor oil for massaging your scalp as well as help to lay down your edges, if you don’t want to use gel or edge tamer. “So what’s so great about extra virgin olive oil?” You can use this oil to deep condition your hair. “And coconut oil?” Well coconut oil can be used for practically everything!

Seriously, when I first starting my healthy hair journey, I heard about all the benefits of using natural oils in your hair for it to be and remain healthy. After a while, my notebook was filled with different oils and recipes and I was completely confused. Supposedly every single oil has it’s own purpose that it can be use in a hair regimen.

So I learned my own hair and purchased my oils based on my hair needs instead of purchasing oils that I had no idea about nor how to use them.

6 Ways To Retain Length On Fine, Natural Hair

Fine Natural Hair Compared To A Piece Of Thread
My natural hair is not the same as your natural hair, quite frankly not all naturalistas have thick, voluminous hair! Some of us have fine, less dense hair that causes us to look for helpful information to keep our hair moisturized, supple, and retaining length.

Fine hair is referred to a skinnier (thinner) thickness or width of the individual hair strand. To determine if you have fine hair just take one of your shed hairs and measure it against a regular sewing thread for thickness.

If your hair strand is wider than the piece of thread, your hair strand is thick. If your hair strand is thinner than the piece of thread, your hair strand is fine.

Product Review: Aphogee Style and Wrap Mousse

I normally have great experiences with rollers sets because of my hair care and styling technique, no matter what styling product I would use. I have used Creme of Nature Foaming Mousse, Alikay Naturals Crème Brulee, Curls-R-Us Curl Definer, Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel, and others to set my roller styles...but I still haven't found the right one yet. Let's see if this new product will be the one I've been looking for...

Product Review: Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner

I absolutely love Shea Moisture Yucca Milk, but it has gotten too expensive for me to use. I have used Cantu Shea Butter Leave In for a few weeks, which has actually been an 'oldie-goodie' product to fall back on. However, I have heard great things about Giovanni and decided to give it a try!

Healthy Hair Ingredient | Olive Oil For Nourishing Dry Hair

Olive Oil For Nourishing Dry Hair
Natural hair and the cold, winter months surely DO NOT MIX! Try styling your hair in a cute style only to come up with dry curls by the middle of the day. That is surely not a good look.

If you are struggling with dry and crunchy curls, try adding olive oil to your natural hair arsenal. No matter how you use olive oil, your hair will definitely look and feel healthier - even in the dry and cold winter months!

My Mane Speaks | Yasss Girl! Big Chop Number 2

My Hair Diary | My Mini Chop From Heat Damage

So I decided to do Big Chop #2 to celebrate my 3rd year of being natural and to cut all the heat damage out! The first time I transitioned, there was literally that ugly stage and I was not going through that again. Besides, I love the TWA look on me. Can you say "fierce and flawless?"

And here comes my mane!

My 3rd Year NappyVersary | My Mini Chop From Heat Damage

My Hair Diary | My Mini Chop From Heat Damage
Look at my damaged hair! I'm about to cut 4-5 inches of hair!!!

Soooo this is my 3rd year of being a naturalista! Yay me!!! I'm so excited and very proud of myself during this year to learn, grow, and understand my hair.

After reflecting on the journey of my relaxed hair to my natural hair of 3 years, I thought about something...I never knew what to do with my hair during those years. Even this past year, I was still not sure what to do with my hair and what products to use. I would experiment to find the best products for me, but something was still not clicking.

Confessing My Own Thoughts | The No-Heat Challenge

When you are wearing a long term protective style, you think about your hair journey and how to better your hair care regimen. I read over my hair diary for this year (2015) and realized that heat has been a huge pain in my journey no matter how or when I use it. So you know what????

NO MORE HEAT!!! LIKE NEVER, EVER, EVER!!!!!

Image Credit: Beauty And Fashion Tech
I just won't do it! Nope. I'm done with direct heat! Flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers just suck. They burn and fry my hair no matter how much protection I would give my hair. So I'm not using them any more!

Protective Style Series! Vol 6.4 | How To Remove Crochet Braids Carefully

FreeTress Bohemian Crochet Braids
FreeTress Bohemian is definitely one of the best synthetic hair that I have ever worn. Using this hair provides 1). a long-term style, 2) a cheap style, 3) and one that you can "wake-shake-go!" I absolutely love this hair. I will definitely use this hair again and maybe experiment with different cuts and styles.
So now that I have reflected on this hair, it is time to remove it. I need to give my hair a good cleansing, but I will return to another protective style soon.

Confessing My Own Thoughts | My Relaxed Hair, Transitioning, And Starting Fresh

I have reached 3 years natural! I'm excited about that because I have had some triumphs and doubts about my hair this past year. So to commemorate this special day, I will reflect on my pictures and entries, starting from the beginning:
My Hair Diary | My Mini Chop From Heat Damage

Wow! Just looking back at pictures of my relaxed hair makes me think, "Why did my mama have me get a relaxer?" I was 12 years old in the 7th grade (about 2002) when I first got my period and things changed quick.

I wasn't exactly the most excited growing woman ever, but what resonated in my ear the next moment would always make me think 'why?'..."You are a woman now! Now you can get a relaxer, sweetheart!!"

I never wanted a relaxer...I hated my relaxed hair...I wish I never gotten a relaxer...

Quarterly Natural Hair Advancement | Comparing June And September 2015

I AM A NATURALISTA!
*THIS IS A LONG ENTRY*

I decided to let you experience one of the things I do in my Hair Diary! Although I record my triumphs, failures, double failures, and awesome product reviews, I also do something called the "Quarterly Natural Hair Advancement (QNHA)." This entry reflects on the last 3 months comparing with the previous QNHA while giving a summary in one whole journal entry.

There are a lot of comparisons with lengths, regimens, goals, habits, and hair styles. I also include pictures to show that I have either improved or that I need to improve in a specific area. I started this back in June 2013 and I do the QNHA at the end of the months: March, June, September, and December. Yes, I am very intricate with my Hair Diary...but this helps me perfect my current regimen, helps me with future styling options, reminds me of my hair goals, and just fun to do!!

5 Ways To Share Your Hair Journey With Your Loved Ones

Sisters: All Naturalistas
The decision to go natural was definitely my own and I felt it was the best decision for my hair.
When I first started my journey, I was on cloud 9 and just so proud of myself for finally loving my hair. However, it was a struggle for my family to love my decision to go natural. I mean, I was the only one in my family to rock my natural at the time, but I did not think it would be a struggle for my family to love my hair like I did...

4 Reasons To Have Hairspirations

What exactly are hairspirations? They are hair inspirations of your favorite women and men to follow because of their hair tips, hair styles, and of course their hair. You may call them your hair idols or hair gurus, but if you follow them or get updates on blogs they have posted then they definitely have something to offer to you and your own hair journey.

Whether you’re searching for advice on transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair, tips on keeping your hair moisturized and sealed, how to retain length, or simply how to define those stubborn curls of yours, there are many reasons why everyone should have hairspirations:

No More Excuses! – 5 Ways To Sneak Deep Conditioning Into Your Busy Schedule

Product Review: Indian Hemp Masque
Listen, after you read this post you will be fresh out of excuses as to why you cannot deep condition your hair. Deep conditioning is vital for some of us who might be experiencing a little breakage, dry hair, over processed hair, colored hair or normal hair that needs a bit of vitality.

With that said deep conditioning your hair can be pretty time consuming, especially when you have lots of things to do during the weekdays and weekends.

For me I had to come up with something to not skip that important step in my hair care regimen. I tried a few methods to get deep conditioning treatments in, some of which I will share with you here.

Thank You For Stopping By!
