Hair Tests | Vol. 1.3 What Is My Hair Texture?

Hair Tests | Vol. 1.3 What Is My Hair Texture?
Now that we have learned that hair type/pattern is the amount of wave or curl a hair strand has without any manipulation, but what about hair texture? Yes, there is a difference...let's learn more about our hair!

Refers to the thickness or width of individual strands
  1. Find a shed hair in your hair tool or while detangling your hair
  2. Get some sewing thread - This is used to measure the thickness of your hair strands
  3. Compare your hair strand to the thread - If your hair is really curly, stretch it out to measure (it is easier to tape down the hair and thread combo on a white sheet of paper)
    1. Thick/coarse - wider than the piece of thread
    2. Medium - about the same width as the pieces of thread
    3. fine - thinner than the piece of thread

Hair Tests | Vol. 1.2 What Is My Hair Type?

Hair Tests | Vol. 1.2 What Is My Hair Type?

Hair typing doesn't have to be difficult and you definitely don't need to ask everyone on Facebook. You can just tell from looking at pictures and charts what your hair type is. Hair typing is the amount of curl or bend your hair has. It is possible to have only one or numerous types.

Here are two different kinds of Hair Typing Systems to help determine what hair type you have to better understand your hair:

Hair Tests | Vol. 1.1 How Do I Learn My Hair?

How Do I Learn My Hair?
Learning and knowing your hair is a big part of being on a healthy hair journey. There are many ways you can learn what kind of hair you have. Personally, I think these tests are fun and pretty interesting, especially when you learn the results. So why don't you try them!

Below are the tests to find out your hair type, texture, density, porosity, moisture and protein balance, breaking and shedding, elasticity, length, and archetype. I know right? I spend lots of time reading and researching about hair, but that's my thing! Check out it out for yourself:

Hair Tips | What Do I Do About Heat Damage?

Confessing My Own Thoughts | The No-Heat Challenge

See this is why I am afraid to use flat irons and blow dryers on my precious coils. "Trying something different" has been the culprit of many naturals, especially newbie naturalistas, if you don't know what you are doing.

I wanted to get my hair flat ironed for a wedding I was in a few months ago...and now I am experiencing heat damage on my bangs. I do remember my hair stylist spending more time on my bangs than the rest of my hair, but I didn't think all hair would be damaged even with the extensive protein treatment and other preventive measures.

*sigh* this is so frustrating...

My Hair Diary | Comparing Hair Growth 2013 And 2014

Comparing Hair Growth 2013 And 2014

I cannot even express to you how excited I am about my hair growth from 2013 to 2014!!! I am so serious when I say that I have NEVER GOTTEN PAST SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR! And all it took was just: TLC, patience, time, and effort. I realized that with health comes length.

So I did a lot more protective styles: Crochet Braids, Senegalese twists, Mini Twists, Buns, and Flat twists. I even cut down so many products and started creating my own products with juices and oils.

Check out the comparison pictures of the end of 2013 and the end of 2014. Black hair does grow!

Hair Tips | Bedtime Routine For Natural Hair

How To | Bedtime Routine For Natural Hair
I came across this new sleep loving company called Casper that ships  mattresses to your door in a box the size of a mini-fridge. They know that even the best mattress can't tame wild hair, so they want to know how sleepers prepare for the inevitable bed head!

That is an awesome idea, because what's the point of moisturizing and sealing your hair for the day to just go to bed with nothing on your hair for the night? NO POINT! Wrapping your hair at night is just as important as moisturizing and sealing your hair. So let's get to it!

100 Years of Beauty: Black Hairstyles In A Minute

I can't even describe how much I love this!

100 Years of Beauty: Black Hairstyles In A Minute

I saw this video on Facebook and was so excited to see a black woman getting all DONE UP in a time lapse of getting her hair and makeup done of every decade from 1910 to 2010. This video was uploaded 1/15/15 by Cut Video. and already has over 1 million views, which is just about reaching 2 million!

I absolutely love this video because it gives so much insight on how much we value our hair and what we portrayed to others. Black hair is very versatile and this video shows those trends through out the past 100 years. You get the Josephine Baker cropped hair and pinned curls, Billie Holiday's classic gardenias updo, Diana Ross's bouffant, the Poetic Justice box braids of Janet Jackson, Alicia Keyes' braided Afro, and more. This video shows all the hottest and most chic styles of Black hair (I think there are way more).

CurlKit Unboxing | January 2015

CurlKit Unboxing | January 2015

Well, this is bitter-sweet for me. This is the last CurlKit I will receive...yes, I am unsubscribing to CurlKit from receiving a kit every month. What's really interesting is that I'm really sad about it because I love the products that I received to try, give away, or review. I really liked the fact that I support CurlKit as a business...however, all good things must come to an end.

I have my staple products and regimen set for this year of 2015 for healthy hair and growth. I just feel that it is time to stop receiving products from Curl Kit.

Well, let's get to the unboxing of CurlKit of January 2015!

Hair Tips | How To Moisturize And Seal Hair Effectively
I mean, look at my sad, thirsty mane from 2013. I did not know how to moisturize my hair let alone know how to even have and keep healthy hair. But then that's when I learned lots of helpful information on how to have and retain healthy hair from Curly Nikki, Black Girl Long Hair, Black Hair Information, and Naturally Curly. I also saw how this was done on YouTube and took my hair's health in my own hands.

My hair needed moisture!

How To | Grow Natural Hair Long And Healthy With Mini Twists

How To | Grow Natural Hair Long And Healthy With Mini Twists

Well,  retaining length is what you should really be focusing on (if growth is your hair goal), as I have pointed out tips to do so in Hair Did Not Grow In 2014? Plan For Success In 2015 and  My Hair Won't Grow! Huh? 9 Tips To Help You. Hair definitely grows, but what are you doing to retain your length that you have grown? Better yet, are you doing the following things?

  • no regular moisturizing and sealing
  • double and over processing with chemicals
  • handling hair very rough and with no patience
  • excessively using heat appliances
  • braids and twists are way too tight
  • not using a satin/silk scarf or bonnet to bed
  • you are not eating healthy

If so, not only are you doing unhealthy hair practices, but there would be no way that you would be able to retain your length that you have grown if you continue on like this.

Some More Hair Practices We Do That Everyone Says Are Bad For Us

YOU ANNOY ME!

I have already discussed some hair practices in an earlier article that we do that others are like, "Soooo you shouldn't use that...use this instead." I mean really? That can be so irritating and very frustrating when I am trying to learn my own hair by doing trial and error and you try to save me with your 'education' and 'wisdom.' Seriously, going natural an overwhelming experience and already being natural with staple products makes the experience as simple as possible...so why add more stress?

Well, here are a few more hair practice we tend to do that everyone else says are 'bad for us.' Check out the article!

Healthy Hair Ingredient | Coconut Oil For Hair Growth And Softness

Coconut Oil For Hair Growth And Softness

I LOVE COCONUT OIL!!!!!

Not only do I use coconut oil for cooking (substitute the butter and other cooking oils) and for my skin, but I love using coconut oil for my hair. I believe coconut oil was the first oil I started using for my healthy hair journey, when I first went natural (along with Olive oil). I ditched olive oil for castor oil, but I don't think my hair can live without coconut oil.

I love my commercials products, but nothing beats the benefits of coconut oil. I've also read up on the secrets of long hair of Indian women...and coconut oil is the main product they use!!! So hey, why not use this for my own healthy hair journey. There are just too many pros to not get or at least try coconut oil:

What are the benefits?

5 Hair Practices We Do That Everyone Says Are Bad For Us

Okay we get it!

We get that we shouldn’t use certain products to care for our hair or we don’t need to do certain things to our hair for it to remain healthy. Anything else you want to tell me? No? Good!

One curlfriend will love shampoo and the other will exclusively co wash. One kinky gal will only air dry and the other will use a t-shirt to dry her hair, then blow dry the rest. At the end of the day do your research to find the best hair practices for you.

Natural Beauty In My Life | Rachel And The Curl She Lives

Natural Beauty In My Life | Rachel And The Curl She Lives
What is natural hair?

I would consider natural as 'having no relaxer or chemical in your hair that causes your hair to straighten or to loosen your natural curl, coil, or kink."

I am proud to say that this Natural Beauty In My Life is definitely a naturalista and embodies the love of her own hair. Having 3a /curly hair and being mixed with Hawaiian, Mexican, and Japanese, I have always loved her hair! Not envious or jealous in any way, I just loved the fact that she embraces her own natural curls and twirls..

Ms. Rachel, who is my future sister-in-law, is so laid back that when I said, "Hey! I want to give you a hair interview!" She said, "Cool. When?" Well, here she is:

My Hair Diary | My 2015 Goals For My Natural Hair Journey

So now that you know my mistakes and failures of 2014, here are my goals for 2015 to continue on my healthy hair journey:

My 2015 Goals For My Natural Hair Journey

Castor Oil For Growth

Use castor oil religiously

I will definitely keep up with massaging my scalp at least 4 times a week with castor oil, which is my favorite oil to use. I will love to try castor oil in my deep conditioner for more conditioning benefits. I can keep up with this goal.

Throw out my Denman and wide tooth comb...finger detangle only

Thank You For Stopping By!
