"My hair is soooo dry!!!!" This can be so frustrating when you just put in your leave-in moisturizer and sealed with your oils, just to find out that your hair is too greasy or dry the next morning. That would have me at "hello???" I would be so confused on why my hair would not retained the moisture...then I did some research...

Porosity: the ability for your hair strands to retain moisture.

Here is how to test for porosity:

  1. Get shedding hair strands - Get from brush or shower wall (after washing)
  2. Get a cup of water - Use a clear cup/glass to see your hair strands from all sides
  3. Float your hair in the water - Place (not push) your hair on top of the water
  4. Observe what happens for 2 minutes
    1. Low - strand floats and does not sink at all
    2. Medium - strand sinks slowly to the bottom
    3. High/Porous - strand sinks quickly to the bottom

Your hair cuticles are raised, which means your hair loses moisture very easily. You can get severe damage from chemical processing, excessive heat damage, and even from the environment. You would need to use heavy products to layer on my hair (L.O.C Method) which can retain the moisture in your hair. Try using heavy butter and protein treatments to care for your hair.

How do I care for medium porosity hair?

Your hair retains moisture very well, which is why you may not moisturize your hair too often (maybe 3xs a week). Maintain a healthy hair regimen by doing deep conditioning treatments with proper moisturizing. Try not to use too much heat.

How do I care for low porosity hair?

Your hair keeps moisture in like a wife keeping a husband - TRAPPED (hahaha just kidding! Don't tell my husband!!) Your hair cuticles are very tight and sometimes overlap, which can be a great thing...until you try to deep conditioning and they are still tight. This is why you would need to use heat to get any moisture in your hair, which raises the hair cuticles. You may not have to moisturize your hair too much, by the products sitting on your hair during the week. Use water-based products with light oils to not get product build up.

What is MY hair porosity?

I definitely have low porosity hair. My hair strands (top, bottom, left, right, middle) all stayed on top of the water for more than 2 minutes. They just floated around the cup of water, afloat.

Deep conditioning is sent from God for low porosity hair!

I'm so serious when I say that I deep condition my hair weekly. Don't forget to add the steam or heat to open the hair cuticles.

And now I don't have an issue with keeping my hair moisturized. I'll moisturize and seal my hair 3xs a week, maybe more depending on the style. But I don't need to everyday...don't need it and my hair stays moisturized!
