Hair Tips | Pre-Poo Treatments For Natural Hair

Pre pooing at work...oh yes,
I'm dedicated!

I DO PRE-POO TREATMENTS WEEKLY!

It's a must for my fine-natural hair.

Pre-poo or hot oil treatments are great for those with fine-natural hair to help keep the hair soft, promote shine, and to keep the hair detangled with ease. These treatments are also great for those who use shampoos (especially with sulfate) so your hair won't be too stripped.

I differentiate pre-poo and hot oil treatments. I use different products and ingredients for certain purposes my hair needs at the time. Following are the benefits and the ingredients/recipes of pre-poo treatments.

Pre-poo means pre-shampoo.

This treatment helps to detangle and condition your hair before thoroughly washing your hair. This is a NEEDED treatment for those who have trouble with detangling and lose way too much hair during the washing process or styling. Your shed hair needs to come out of your hair before washing so 1). the shed hair won't tangle with the hair on your hair and 2). so your hair won't mat during the washing/styling process.

Benefits:

  • Hair is more manageable and easier to detangle
  • Reduces breakage
  • Restores moisture and makes hair softer

How To Pre-Poo

You can use natural oils, cheap conditioner, coconut milk/coconut oil, honey, avocados, yogurt, bananas, or any other ingredients that will help with detangling and conditioning.

  1. While dry, separate your hair into 4-6 manageable sections
  2. Apply your pre-poo mixture to one section of your hair from tips to root, making sure to detangle your hair
  3. Loosely twist/bantu knot/clip your hair and continue the process for the rest of the sections
  4. Cover your hair with a plastic cap for at least 30 minutes to allow your hair to condition
  5. Once done, rinse your hair thoroughly and follow through your regular wash regimen.

My Experience

I absolutely love my pre-poo treatments. I use coconut milk or coconut oil with other moisturizing ingredients to help detangle and moisturize my hair. When I detangle, I only use my fingers to feel for the knots - I don't use hair tools like a Denman brush or comb for detangling. Then I leave overnight (or into the next day) to give my hair the much needed moisture and conditioning powers. I don't use my hooded dryer for this process. My hair is pretty much moisturized, soft, and detangled by the time I do my washing regimen without the heat.

I use Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle for my pre-poo treatment. This product has awesome slip, great conditioning magic, and detangles my hair without any pulling or damage. I absolutely love this product!

How Often Should I Pre-Poo?

Pre-Poo is done before you shampoo your hair, so you should pre-poo when you shampoo your hair. So weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. That is surely up to you, your lifestyle, and what your hair needs.

Essentially, pre-pooing is for detangling your hair before you go through your wash regimen. It is utterly important to make sure you get the shed hair out before going through Wash Day.
