My Hair Diary | Perm Rod Set #Fail

Perm Rod Set #Fail
Confession 1: I cried a bit when my hair didn't dry by morning

Confession 2: I had a million bobby pins to try to make a decent style with my wet mop

Confession 3: I did not make eye contact, visit anyone, or go out that day. I went to work and went back home after work....because of my hair

Soooooo I knew my roller set was not dry when I felt a cool breeze on my scalp. I mean I knew what I knew!! I knew that this was not going to end well.

It took me 2.5 hours to put my hair in 64 rollers! I washed and deep conditioned with my regular staples for a defined perm rod set. I used my Shea Moisture Smoothie, coconut oil, and a little bit of Eco Styler Krystal to set my hair. I was so happy about my set too!

Here are 3 tips to make sure your hair doesn't suck...no matter what set you do for the night (twist out, Bantu knot out, curling set, etc.)

1. Make sure your hair is completely dry

This is so important when doing any kind of wet set. Just because I am natural, does not mean that I can get a "free-pass" that water doesn't affect my hair. Wrong! If I am going for a curly set, I need to make sure my hair is totally dry...or end up with shiny curly ends and puff roots...and a million bobby pins to "fix" my style

2. Don't do a curly set at night

This comes with time management and staying with your hair schedule. I did this perm rod set on a whim. I didn't even need my hair to be washed, but I wanted to do my hair on wet hair. This makes absolutely no sense when I have to get up at 6am and I curl my hair at 9pm. No ma'am! Makes no sense at all

3. Sit under a hooded dryer, if possible

I know, I know I am an air-dry type of gal...but I should have used the hooded dryer. My hair takes at least 8 hours to dry completely...maybe. I could have just sat under the hooded dryer for 3 hours and spared myself the tears, the million bobby pins, and the dodging of coworkers that morning. But no! I'm an air-dry type of gal...sometimes your own pride and ego need to be set aside for the good of your hair.

AAAAANNNNNDDDDD...Make sure your perm rods are clean!

So there you have it! A certified-classic perm rod set fail...if only I just did my bunny puff instead and set my hair in my perm rod set the next day.

Natural hair says: your pre-planned styles will have 87.99% chance of pulling through the next morning. Not all styles you thought would work will actually work. But that is why it is called a "healthy hair journey." Don't give up on a style because you were a failure that time (or more than a few times). Just write your wrongs and mistakes in your hair diary/journal and try again next time.
