Natural Hair Tutorial | Mini Twists On Fine Natural Hair

Mini Twists On Fine Natural Hair
One of my absolute fav YouTube Naturalistas is Alicia James. I have actually watched her since the beginning of my natural hair journey. Her videos are short and simple. She also gives you great encouragement and tips for healthy hair growth and retaining that growth.

I went to her webpage and noticed that her length retention came from a simple regimen, low manipulation styles, and protective styling. So I thought hmm maybe I should get back into my protective styling fun-ness to retain more length!

1). Start on freshly washed hair. Use your leave-in on damp hair and use this time to fully detangle your hair. I used Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner and my Denman Brush.

2). For this style, make sure your hair is completely dry and stretched. The hair will be easier to manipulate, less frizzy when dried, and be more elongated while styled.

3). Section your hair in a way that is manageable to you.

4). Take out your curl cream, oil, and butter to aid with the twisting process. I used Shea Moisture Smoothie.

5). Take a small to medium size part from your big section and add your products lightly in layers (cream, oil, butter). Braid at the root 3 times over (you don't want puffy roots). Then two strand twist the part until 1/2 inch from the end. Do not borrow hair from the sections. Do not 'rope twist' (Senegalese twist). Finger coil the end with a bit of butter to keep end from unraveling.

6). Repeat steps 4 and 5 all over the head to get awesome two strand twists! You do not need to have clean parts if you don't want to.

Care for Mini Twists

  • Put your leave-in, water, and oil in a spray bottle to moisturize your twists when needed.
  • Use a light oil to massage your scalp with and on your ends to keep them less frayed at least 3 times a week.
  • Use a satin scarf to hold your hair in place while you sleep.

I purchase the white thread from the local beauty supply for $1.00

  • Use ponytail holders or sewing thread to elongate your hair. This will also keep your hair from tangling around each other. I do this method twice a week.

See how my hair is stretched?

And there you have it! It took me about 2.5 hours to do my mini twists, which is not too bad.And I love it! I will find myself doing mini twists more often.

This style can last for 2 to 4 weeks, with great care for the twists. You can style your two strand twists in any style: spiral with curlers, updo in flat twists, etc. Have fun with your mini twists!

Natural hair says: we all get tired of our hair sometimes, but you don't have to reach for the braid extensions or wear a wig. Try the mini twists style for something new and different. And it's also a plus as you retain more length by this protective style!
