Cleansing Natural Hair With Rhassoul Clay OR Mud Wash |
This year is already full of changes with my hair regimen and staple products. One of those things would be what I use to wash my hair, how often I wash my hair, and what is this co washing business? Oh, yes I have switched up from using Shea Moisture Curl and Shine Shampoo and Shea Moisture Raw Retention Conditioner/Masque to using Rhassoul Clay for cleanse/deep conditioning and Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner for co washing. I saw Naptural 85's DIY clay wash recipe and saw her hair health and understood the benefits. So I thought I would try this clay wash.
What is Rhassoul Clay?
According to Durable Health, The name “Rhassoul” derives from the Arabic word for washing, “Rhassala.” It is well-known for its incomparable ability to absorb impurities from the skin and hair and give the skin and hair highly helpful minerals.
What are the benefits and uses of Rhassoul Clay?
There are many benefits besides using it to cleanse your hair: improves skin texture, reduces dryness and flakiness, and improves skin clarity. It can be used instead of soap, as a facial scrub, to strengthen nails, and as an arthritis treatment. So I'm ready to use this clay!!!!
Why Did I Change To Rhassoul Clay?
I'm a big kitchenista and like to create my own hair products to learn more about my hair. Also, when I clarify and cleanse my hair, I still want my hair to feel soft and moisturized even after washing my hair and before deep conditioning. I also do not like the "suds" when washing my hair. So, I decided that switching over to the mud wash would be greener and more appropriate for continuing my hair health.

Pour 1/2 cup Aloe Vera Juice (AVJ) as your base. You can use water to substitute the AVJ if you know you are sensitive to it. |
My Experience with Rhassoul Clay
I applied the Rhassoul clay on my scalp first to loosen the product build up that was accumulated and massaged the mixture for about 5 minutes, per section. Then, I add more clay to the length of my hair and SCRUNCHED the mixture throughout my hair, and not vigorously RUN my fingers and hairs over the sections. I'm learning to be more gentle with my hair and the mixture will take care of the cleansing process.Once I had Rhassoul clay throughout each section, I did clip them up and kept the mixture in for about 10 minutes for deep cleansing.
When that time is up, I rinsed my hair out with lukewarm water and sprayed cold AVJ over my hair to seal the moisture in and continued with my leave-in and styling.

My Thoughts on Rhassoul Clay
I absolutely love this mud wash! Like seriously, this is the best thing that has happened to my hair. Not only does this clay cleanse my hair effectively with no trace of product buildup, but my hair very so soft when cleansing my hair with this clay. I absolutely love it!
Using this clay wash once a month is just enough to alleviate my scalp and hair of any product buildup I may have. And co washing for the rest of the weeks with Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner is just enough to have a great healthy hair journey.

Other Mud Wash Recipes
There are lots of clay and mud wash recipes to use for cleansing your hair effectively. I've only used my mud wash for 3 months now. But before that, I've never heard of using clay to wash your hair. But like I have said before, clay has been using for washing for years, centuries, eons, and whatever else is bigger than that. Try these different mud washes for yourself:
You can also using clay washes as a deep conditioning treatment as well. This surely makes sense, because the clay wash makes your hair so soft anyways. So why not use it as a deep conditioning treatment?
