My Hair Diary | My Top 6 Natural Hair Mistakes In 2017

Fine Natural Hair - Shoulder Length
I definitely had lots of mistakes in 2016 and set my 2017 goals based on them. Yet! 2017 was a great year of learning from finding new staple products, to focusing on problem areas of my hair, to cutting my again...again. I will say I have really accomplished much with learning and appreciate my natural hair even more than the years before.

However, with accomplishments there are also mistakes and failures. This is what a healthy hair journey is about! If you do not make the mistakes of going through the failures, there would be no way to make yourself better at caring for your own hair.

Here are my top 6 natural hair mistakes of 2017:

Not Eating Nor Exercising Like I Should

Now I am not a guru of healthy living, but this is definitely the most important part to having healthy hair and a healthy body. However you feed your body, will definitely come out with how your in how the health of your hair will be.

Wearing Too Many 'Out' Styles

I used to be the protective style fanatic, but during 2017 I would do more 'out' styles more than I should. I was all over twists outs, afros, afro puffs, and don't let me get started on wash n gos. It got to a point that I didn't even do protective styles at all during months at a time. The first day would be perfect, but then I would find myself retwisting or remoisturizing my hair every night. I would wear my 'out' styles because I was so focused on my length and volume that I wasn't focusing on my hair health.

Not Using Coconut Oil

I definitely gave up the coconut oil, because others who decided to give coconut oil up. But for me, this (and even coconut milk) worked well for my hair because of the protein to keep my hair strengthened and being a great conditioner really gave my hair life. Coconut oil, for me, is the truth!

 Not Moisturizing Enough

I definitely didn't do enough of this! I would mostly use my curl defining products than my leave-in conditioners because I didn't have enough time for my hair. I would literally go from washing to styling my hair, and no LOC method nor real moisture step. My hair would be extra dry when wearing my 'out' styles.

Giving Up What Works

When I would do my DIY products, I would have a few tried-and-trues that would absolutely worked for my hair. I used Aloe vera juice, rice water, apple cider vinegar, green tea rinse, and oils with added essential oils. For some reason, I just gave all it all up! I can say that letting go of my DIYs did create downfall in my hair because I wasn't giving my hair the proper love that I used to give her.

Comparing My Hair With Other Hair Journeys

The main reason why I start my natural hair diary and Desire My Natural is to comparing my past years of my hair journey with my present and my future goals. Yet, I would look at my natural hair inspirations and get a bit discouraged on what I was doing wrong in my own hair.

Like why couldn't my hair grow like that? Why don't my wash n gos curl like that? Why won't those products work in my hair? Why does my hair grow out and up and not down with extra volume? I had to remind myself over and over tat my hair is my own and unique to me. I literally would read though my hair diary whenever I felt this way to encourage myself.
